I'm back!! After a three week hiatus due to weddings, travel, weather and illness, I am getting back into the swing of things. I am excited to get back into race shape and see what everyone else is up to.

6 x 800 with the track club. Not as bad as I thought. Started around 3:27, last one was 3:07. It's nice to be back to my Tuesday night routine of intervals, a protein shake and a new episode of 90210 :)  And the bunny and turtle seem happy to be settled back in too.

I am not certain on my exact goals yet. I plan to run a 5k either January 31st or February 7th, depending on how quickly I feel like I'm coming back.

Hope everyone is doing great!

There's this place in Jacksonville called Camicakes that only sells cupcakes. Yeah, pretty amazing. And these aren't just any cupcakes, they're like couture cupcakes.

From montelepsy on Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 01:34:21

I do like being correct.

I love baked goods. Rachel and her mom have made me a snob when it comes to them. I can no longer eat brownies from a mix and the taste of margarine offends me.

If I'm ever in FL I'll definitely try those schmancy cupcakes.

I think we just commented each other at the same time :) I am trying to get back into the grind, but I realize my procrastination skills have improved over the holidays. I'm all about a cruise... or I'd even settle for a flight to some remote island or something, I'm not picky!

From Marion on Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 17:45:25

I'm in for the island, so long as there is a cook and a housekeeper. We can just lie on the beach and drink margarita and just lie on the beach some more! :D

From kelsey on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 21:00:50

actually i just looked up the name of the workout and it's FAST abs instead of killer abs. haha. it's more of a pilates type core workout, and i just didn't feel it. i'll give it another chance though. they had one in there last year that i liked better, i may go find it.

Nice run, Kelsey! Way to show your FRB spirit! I agree that when I see someone else running, I just naturally feel like I must beat them! I too looked at the RW core workout in the Feb issue while "working" hard at the bookstore haha. I feel as though I should probably do more core work only because I'm not sure how much crunches/situps actually do for me you know?

From kelsey on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 22:32:45

Yeah, I know what you mean. I would like to get into a good core routine to make myself stronger to avoid injury, and possibly faster. I just can't find one I really like. I just don't enjoy doing those planks and things. I think it's because I prefer to baby my knees, and those challenge them a little bit. That is probably a good thing though. I think I need to combine all the core workouts I have in different magazines and create my own.

In the morning I volunteered at the local 30k race and froze for a good 4 hours (24 degrees at the start- brrrr). It was definitely some good motivation to get back into shape though, and I enjoyed ringing my cowbell and cheering people in. Not to mention the free shirt and chili :)

After a good nap and cup of coffee I went out on my run. (I waited til it was a beautiful 55 degrees).  I needed to do 7 and decided it would be really good if I added a 3 mile tempo in the middle. I think I was overestimating my abilities and only did 1.5 tempo, but it was still a decent run and on a mega-hilly course.

3 miles easy, 1.5 @ 15k pace (10:40), 2.5 @ marathon pace = 58:46 (avg. 8:23)

I realized today that my GPS watch can do harm. I tried running way too fast on a day that is supposed to be really easy. And it doesn't help that I am out of shape, so I can't run at the pace I could two months ago but I try to anyway. So this is the second run in a row that I let my watch get me to run too fast. Neither of these work outs were what they were supposed to be. So for now on I will be smarter about what days I wear the watch, and need to listen to my body more than the pace written on the watch.

Nice miles!! It's so fun to run with friends!! How's the ice cream? I ate a WHOLE pint of B&J Cherry Garcia light last night. At least it was light :D

From kelsey on Sat, Jan 24, 2009 at 16:43:46

Since you asked... :) I finally finished the kind I had so it was time to go ice cream shopping. I settled on Red Velvet flavor- Vanilla ice cream with red velvet cake chunks, pecans, and cream cheese swirls. It's good, but I was slightly disappointed because I got way too excited about it. It's also full fat so I'm limiting it to only the days that I run. Light is the way to go so you can eat more and not feel guilty!

I think I want to do Edy's Double Churned Birthday Cake next. But we'll just have to see!

San Luis, 8:35/mile

Felt great, wanted to go further but don't want to do add too much too fast.

It felt really hot and muggy so I came back and checked the weather. 66 with 90% humidity. Exact same conditions as my marathon but 2 degrees cooler. Makes me think about how miserable that day was. Super gross.

well that was only for like 1/2 a mile :) i'm hunting a 5k PR this spring, so i'm just trying to work up my lactic acid tolerance. so on my easy days i just push it beyond comfort for a short distance, although i doubt it really makes a difference.

Perfect running day- dry and 55 degrees. Since I committed myself to doing a 15k with a 5k tempo today, I was forced to do it. I didn't want to have to deal with the wrath of Kelli! :)

5k warm up- 27:48 (8:58/mile)

5k tempo- 21:02 (6:47/mile)!!! I am really excited about this. Stuck around 6:20 during the flat areas but slowed to 7:20s during the uphill. Don't get me wrong, it was really hard, but I think I am getting close to a 20 flat. Next week I will start around 6:30 pace and go from there, hoping for under 20:30. I didn't expect to be running this fast so soon, so I am really happy.

5k cool down- 26:48 (8:39/mile)

15k total- 1:15:38, avg 8:08/mile

There are a few more things I want to take from this work out. One is that I should not skimp on the warm up for 5ks, and now I see that an easy three mile warm up or so does not hurt me, and probably helps me. Also, I want to get more comfortable with the idea of running miles under 7 rather than thinking it's fast. I think I have some good times in me, and hope I stay healthy to see some of them this year.

it was actually pretty cold today! it got down to 14 last night, a record low. so i waited til 11:00 to run, but with the wind chill it was probably close to 30. although 30 is warm for y'all so i shouldn't complain!

From Kelli on Thu, Feb 05, 2009 at 21:25:06

We were actually warmer than that today, well at noon anyway! I thin it was 35 when we ran at 5:15 this mooring. It was downright warm for us!

Good luck on the push-up challenge. This will be my third attempt, but I have done two days so far!

I FINALLY got my biggest running goal I have set for myself- under 20 in the 5k. It only took 12 years!  I thought I would get it this year but didn't think it would be my first race of the year, only training for about 5 weeks. I really hope this means I'll see some great times in 2009, especially once I get my mileage up.

Mile 1: 6:11- Felt really good, I could have gone faster but knew I shouldn't.

Mile 2: 6:30- 1/2 mile of slight uphill. I knew it was going to slow me down. Worried me a bit because I knew I didn't have much time to spare. Felt pretty hard.

Mile 3: 6:14- Felt OK, not great. Slight downhill for a little while so I was able to push it.

Overall I am happy with how I raced. I knew the second mile would be the breaking point, and I am glad I was able to keep it together. It was a tough race and I definitely pushed myself.

For placing second in my age group I got 2 boxes of girl scout cookies! I went for samoas and thin mints. I also got a box of the lemon chalet creams when I registered. I already ate some of the cookies and a pizza buffet to celebrate!

I plan on running next weekend hard if the course is somewhat flat and the weather is nice. Would like to go for 19:45. I want to run under 19:30 at Palace Saloon in April.

Here I am finishing up!

From kelsey on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:31:49

Thanks everyone! I really feel like there's a weight off my shoulders getting under the 20 minute mark.

As for the cookies, growing up I over did it on the Thin Mints and Tagalongs (the peanut butter ones, Marion), which is why I got the lemon creams when I registered. They're pretty good. Then for my prize everyone was telling me to try Samoas. I probably should have gone with Tagalongs instead. Moral of the story- stick with the old faithfuls- Thin Mints and Tagalongs.

Too bad I didn't win, she got 5 boxes!!

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:35:06

OK- thin mints used to be #1- now I have converted to the tag-a-longs. I am a peanut butter fiend, as my 5 year old is deathly allergic. You always crave what you can't have :)

Good workout. A good 400m workout can be one of the most universally beneficial workouts; they can help everyone from 100m runners to ultra runners. Given the 5k time you just posted, I suspect you'll be doing a lot of running with people you've never kept up with before, and if you keep doing workouts like this, you'll be in awesome shape in a few months!

Solid running.

From kelsey on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 20:53:27

Kelli- Thanks... I have no idea what to expect when I get into shape this time but I sure hope you are right :) I did week 2 day 1 today... I am really hoping I don't have to switch to girl push ups to keep up!

Nevels- Thanks for the kind words. I just realized that I wrote 12x400 but we actually did 4x1200 today. I'll have to fix that. We alternate workouts every week though and I agree, I think the 400 intervals and mile intervals are probably the most beneficial. They definitely make you tougher and push you past your comfort zone. I hope you are right about the next few months, I am really hoping for a good year. Thanks for your inspiration- in both your words and your running!

That kind of run happens to me a couple of days before most of my PR attempts (and usually again during the warmup the morning of the event), so don't worry too much about it. Once that gun goes off, the weight will be lifted from your legs, and you'll fly...

New PR!!!!! Before last week I hadn't even gone under 20, so this was a really big race for me! I think my new goal is to go under 19 by the end of the year, which will be really tough. I can't believe it's even a possibility.

It was a pretty nice day; overcast, light wind and 56 degrees. I thought there was a chance the wind could be a problem. For a warm up I did part of the course and realized it was rolling hills. I didn't think I'd even go under 20 because of the hills and light wind. The hills ended up being pretty awesome, the uphill was a little tough (especially the last one) but they were always followed by a downhill. I kept glancing at my watch, and during the uphill I was abloe to keep 6:30 pace for the most part. I really loved the course and for the most part felt really strong. I think I prefer rolling hills to a flat course.

So when we started I planned to run around 6:10-6:15 for the first mile, and then hold it as long as I could. I also wanted to keep first place in sight. Two girls started off faster than me, but I was able to pass them within about the first mile. They were young, and will be very talented in a few years (not that they aren't already).

Mile splits: 6:13, 6:07, 6:14

My "bests" were 5:17 during the first and second miles, 5:24 during the third mile, and 4:52 during my downhill sprint to the finish. That's kind of neat to see because it shows I used the downhill. I liked the downhill finish, it made me feel strong, and it was great seeing Jason's smiling face at the finish line because he knew I ran way faster than I expected. I gave him a high five as I crossed the line.

When they announced my time during the awards ceremony the director said "Kelsey from Tallahassee, Florida... you know she's not from around here if she's running a time like that." That made me feel fast :)

My friends Matt, Jeff, and Scott ran as well, and all did awesome! It was fun running with different people, and we got to see each other a couple times on the course due to the little loops and turn arounds.

So I was looking through the race reports, and I thought for sure this was your report from last week. Then I clicked on the person under you, and it was from this week. So I decided I better come back to see if this was a new race.

Wow! Back to back PR's. Congratulations on the victory. Glad you didn't run in my race today. :)

From Nevels on Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 14:08:06

I just noticed the race that you ran; was it the Rush to Brush 5k in Jackson, MS? If it was, this is the first year since they started the race that I haven't run it, and I agree, it is a somewhat difficult course, which makes the PR all the more impressive. If you can PR on that course, you'll blaze some awesome times on flatter courses...

From MichelleL on Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 16:27:30

Impressive performance! You're on a nice improvement curve. It should mean sub 19's in your near future.

And Kelli, don't worry, I got a milkshake right after the race!

Twinkies, sadly there were no cookies. It was actually the complete opposite of cookies- a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss!

Nevels, yep that's the race. I'm in Jackson for the weekend. That's funny that you've done it too. I really enoyed the energy coming down the hills, they helped pull you up the next one. Except the last uphill, that one got me. But I hope you are right about faster times to come!

That marathon was a little tough for me...the rain, the humidity and the long boring stretches. I did great the first 20 miles then I guess I just lost it! Oh well. I'm trying to get into a 20k trail run in MS for March (registration is closed, we will see) and I am thinking I may do the Nashville Marathon. It takes so much time training with the long runs....right now I'm kind of liking the 13 milers!

3:03, 3:03, 2:57, 2:57, 2:52, 2:43

It has been a surreal day. I found out this afternoon that a professor of mine at Mississippi State committed suicide last night. He left behind a wife, teenage girl, a 6-year old autistic girl, and a 3-year old boy. Not to mention plenty of students. He was a goofy man who had a fun, sarcastic personality until the last couple years. It seems like the wiring in his head went wrong or something. I am struggling with this more than I would have thought I would. For any different reasons. For myself I am going through the grief of the memories, and the sadness for his loss of life. I also feel bad for my friends at Mississippi State, who are with his wife and children right now, and have been since midnight last night, trying to hold up the pieces of what he left behind.  For his family, I feel so bad that they are left to fend without their father/husband, and to deal with grief no one should have to deal with. For him, I feel so bad that he was hurting so bad that this was his only option left. Although, I think it was more "craziness" than "sadness." I also struggle with the idea of heaven and hell and where his actions (committing suicide) sent him. I pray that God recognizes him for the good he did before things began to really spiral downhill the past few years. I hope he finally found peace, and that his family and friends can eventually find theirs as well.

I use to struggle with the idea of suicide, but I don't anymore. After knowing some people that took their own lives I have put more thought into it. The more my life goes by the more trials I go through and pain I experience. I can only imagine the pain they are going through to take their own life. It must be pretty numbing.

I believe we have a very forgiving Heavenly Father, only he knows what we are going through and how to help. I think that the punishment that the person will receive form taking their life is watching their loved ones move on and live life without them.

Hang in there Kelsey, time like these are when we learn the most:)

New recipe that is so good I have to share. Even better than the muffins, if you can believe it.

Baked Chocolate-Stuffed Strawberries (haha yeah that good)

All you need: Strawberries, chocolate chips, optional whipped cream

Take your strawberries and pull off the top. Use a small spoon (I actually use a knife carefully) and scoop out some innards . On the bottom the the strawberry, take a knife and cut a small amount of the tip off; enough so that the end is flat and can stand up on its own, but not enough to cause a hole to see through.

Stuff the strawberries with chocolate chips. I think minis work even better because they melt thoroughly. You can also use chocolate shavings. (Optional: Sprinkle with sugar before baking. I don't think it's necessary.)

Stand them on a baking pan and bake in a 400 degree oven about 10-12 minutes or until strawberries look softer and chocolate is melted.

Serve warm with whipped cream or cool whip. Yummmm.

Also in non-running news, this is what I have been working on for the past year. Just a rough draft. 99% of hurricane research is done using a data set 1850 til now. My goal is to reconstruct past hurricane tracks that have been cited in newspapers, ship logs, etc., by basing them off of modern tracks that hit similar areas. This is a map of the 1766 hurricane season according to the tracks I digitized. I'll stop talking because I am sure no one is reading this, plus it probably only makes sense to me. But this is what I do. These tracks (although only estimates) have never been seen before!

Haha well I will send you a reminder later in Spring. We had some pretty decent ones here so I went for them. I made these for dessert tonight.

I am doing well, but of course school is driving me nuts... 50% because of the cray workload, 50% because I just want to be DONE! But I don't want to be in the job market right now anyway, so I guess I am better off!!! I am just working on being thankful for the many many many blessings in my life... From kelsey on Sun, Mar 01, 2009 at 19:59:37 from 98.230.3.218

Thanks! Yup, I am using a data set that someone else put together based on ship logs and newspapers. It has 373 storms from 1700-1850. Each storm has a few points it hit, like "Puerto Rico and Florida," so I am making tracks based on what recent storms did that hit both of those points. It's pretty exciting in a nerdy way!

I took some inspiration from Marion for my after-run smoothie. In addition to my usual fruit (today- fresh strawberries and half of a frozen banana), milk, and vanilla protein mix, I added some carrots and a piece of kale. (Both of which belonged to my bunny- Sorry, Lewis, I'll get you more!) The consistency was a little weird, but the taste wasn't bad. Couldn't really taste the rabbit food, which is good.

Wooo my first Gulf Winds Grand Prix win!!! Or Winston Cup Series as Jason likes to call it :)

I was aiming for under 42 minutes, Per mile I was just aiming to stay around 6:45 or under. I also wanted some grand prix points.

From the start I felt horrendous. My calves were on fire, my legs felt heavy so my feet were hitting really hard and I just felt really uncoordinated. I could not get into the pace, it felt really hard.  But I just kept looking at my Garmin and knew I had the ability to run at that pace, so I trusted my training and went with it. The 5k and 10k started together so when we parted after a mile or two I had no idea where I was in the race. I had two other girls around me, and we ran together for a mile or so, then around mile 3 it was me and another girl and someone yelled out "First two girls right here!" That's when I realized it was going to be a race. FINALLY around mile 4 I felt myself get into a rhythm and begin to feel comfortable with the pace. The other girl suddenly dropped back, so I was just left to stay strong and run my own race. Pretty difficult course, the hills felt great until the last 2 miles or so, those hills were a little painful. So my time is not all that great but compared to the other people know I was just where I needed to be, maybe even a little faster.

My splits:

6:49 (tough start, I was stuck behind some people)

6:39

6:43

6:34

6:42

6:37

Pretty steady, so i am happy with that. All in all, I guess I set out to do exactly what I wanted, plus got a win out of it! I would be more excited with a faster time, but with this course I am okay with it, and I am proud of myself for persisting through the difficulties of the first few miles.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 13:40:55 from 64.81.245.109

Congratulations on the win.

Suggestions for improvement.

Looking at your 5 K speed - you should be able to run a low 3:00 in the marathon with proper training at the very least. However in order for that to happen you need to train 6 days a week and run long in each run. In your current situation speed work would not be very productive because your performance even in the 5 K is not being limited by speed. What you would benefit the most is base mileage.

From what I remember you said earlier you run low mileage because you are injury-prone. In that case, you can try cross-training for the remainder of the target mileage. So you run 3-4 days a week 6 miles a day, for example, and then additionally you bike hard for an hour and a half on the days you do not run, and for 45 minutes on the days you do. Something like that. Ideally, first max out the running mileage by backing off the pace. Run 9:30 pace if you have to, but get through as many miles as your body can handle injury-free first. Then cross-train for the rest of the mileage.

Additionally - a strict sleeping schedule and a strict observance of a healthy diet can go a long way in injury prevention. We all know what we should do, the reason so few succeed is that most people do not have the discipline to do what they should day after day, no skipping, no excuses, no exceptions.

When talking to girls about diet it is important to make a clarification, so I'll make it just in case. A healthy diet does not mean you do not eat, or eat like a small rodent, it means you eat a lot of good stuff to satiation - fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, a little bit of light meat. No garbage, though, you can sure burn it if you exercise but it weakens the bones, and if nothing else just takes room that should have been used for something more nutritious - after all you can only eat that much.

My legs have been in a slump lately, and felt especially bad for this run. I hope it goes away soon!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

6x800 with the track club. I am still feeling pretty bad on my runs and I have no idea why. I was able to stay with Micah again but it was much harder and the 800s were a little bit slower. I don't know how to explain it. Definite burning in my calves, and just all over fatigue. After 4 miles in my race it finally went away, and after 5 800s today.  The first few miles I run are miserable. Maybe the stress of my comps coming up is getting to me. Regardless, I can push through it all (although not fun) enough to run times that are fairly close to where I should be, but it requires a lot more effort.

I decided to take it really easy this weekend for Gate Rive Run. My goals this year are focused on the Grand Prix for my track club (since it's my last full year in Tallahassee), and a marathon, so this race is just for fun. I am also in no shape to PR and there is absolutely no way  could place in my age group since the race is so competitive. So I think I'll just pick a pace (maybe 7-7:15) and just try to hold it.

Hopefully that will make me feel better sooner, and I can run a decent 10k in a few weeks.

Whenever I get in good distance shape, I tend to experience something similar. I just feel slow, sluggish, and sloppy for the first 6-8 miles, and then I'm fine. I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but it does usually indicate relatively high fitness levels (in my "experiment of one," at least). Keep up the solid training; you're in great shape, running consistently fast times lately, so if you can manage to push through it, I think you'll have some truly awesome times in the relatively near future.

Thanks for letting me know, Burt.

Nevels, I hope you are right. Since I know I am not overtraining (my mileage is still really low) I don't think there is any harm in pushing though it, so hopefully it will pass. I felt a lot better today (Thursday).

Took it reallllly easy (started out around 9:20 pace). Felt decent for the first 4 miles, no pain, feet weren't landing hard. Last 2 actually felt good. Looked down at my watch and I had sped up to 8:45 without knowing it. Wasn't a challenge like the last few runs.

I'm still going to count the race this weekend as a good workout, not push too hard, and try to enjoy it. I am excited to go to Jacksonville to visit Becky (yay!!!!!), eat cup cakes, and celebrate my last couple days of freedom before comps next week. I think this is the biggest race I have ever run in, should be a good time.

Have fun this weekend! Comps are the worst part - as soon as they are over the rest is smooth sailing (though it sometimes won't feel like it I have to admit).

I threated (to all my friends) to wear a Denny's waitress uniform to my oral exams - and start off with something like, "just in case the statistics thing doesn't work out".

From kelsey on Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 17:40:11 from 98.230.3.218

Hahaha. Thanks, I hope they go well! And regardless of how it goes, they will be OVER so that is exciting! The only bad part is I have to wait 3 weeks until I defend my answers at oral comps, but at least I'll have more time to prepare.

I planned on taking this race way easier, but it was just too easy to get swept into the excitement. The top 300 runners (of 12,000?) got VIP treatment at the starting line, and I was one of them! It made me feel so important, and I just couldn't go out there and run 7 minute miles or more like my original plan.

So I went out and actually ran a pretty tough race. Mile 1 felt okay, then miles 2-4.5 or so my calves started burning really bad. I even thought a couple times "what if I can't finish." I really wish I could figure out what was wrong with them. Maybe I need to get a massage and get them worked on? I actually think I had this problem once in college, I'll explain at a later date.

Once my calves started feeling better I was able to pick it up a little bit and get comfortable with the pace. The only major hill was when we ran across the bridge around mile 8-8.5. It slowed me up a little but I passed people, and then I flew down the other side of the bridge and in to the finish. I passed four or five girls at this point. I was shocked at my endurance; my major concern going into the race was the distance. But if my calves felt better I may have been able to PR, even though it was a tougher course. For my next race (a 10k) I think I am going to warm up a lot and hope I get all of the pain out during my warm up.

It was really fun running through Jacksonville. When we ran through some of the neighborhoods everyone was in their front yard tailgating with mimosas and tons of food, cheering all of us on (our names were on our numbers). There were a lot of bands and entertainment along the course. The course would have been cooler if we could see anything... it was realllly foggy the whole time.  I highly recommend this event. It was very organized, and if you can get into the top 300 seeds it is really exciting at the start! I received a hat that says "top 10% finisher."

5k splits:

Great job Kelsey! Especially since you didn't think you were going to run hard. The calf pain is tough, I get regular cross-friction work (or tough massages) done on my legs, I really believe it has helped me a lot. Do you always warm-up for such a short time before you race?

Chalk up another amazing run! You are a fabulous runner and just always amaze me! There is NO WAY you eat as much ice cream as I do, it would slow you down too much! I think it would be so cool to get the VIP treatment like that. At marathons the elite have their own porta potties and they NEVER have to wait in line, that is worth it right there!

I hope you get the calf pain figured out soon!

Congrats on a great race. It was perfect weather - after all the worries that it was going to be hot.

I have run this race a few times (since 1992) and it just gets better (and busier) each year. If you stay around Tallahassee until next Feb., think about running the Donna Marathon or 1/2 - another well run race!

You did amazing - what a great time!!!

Best of luck to you.

Allie, Marion and Burt- Thanks for the continued support!

Kelli- If I lived closer I would challenge you to a contest.

Bonnie- I usually warm up further, but I was worried about the distance aspect of this event, so I saved it for the race. I am going to warm up 3-4 miles for my next race and hope I can get the muscles really warmed up beforehand. I think I may have to try those massages!

twinkies- I definitely loved having all the people around me. I looove talking to other runners and the volunteers and entertainers while running, so this was a great race for me.

cp8010- (Sorry, don't know your name!) Glad you enjoyed the race as well. The weather was pretty nice; the fog was very eerie when crossing the bridge!

A long-winded update on my calves (Any input is greatly appreciated):

I can feel tightness in my right calf even when just sitting today. It is actually lower and towards the outside of my leg, slightly different than the spot that burns while running.

I have looked up anything I can find about calf problems while running. Most websites attribute it to shoes, over-use injuries, or relatively weak calf muscles or shins.  Since I have had the same type of shoes through 5 pairs of shoes now, and my training has definitely not increased too quickly and I am still only running 30 miles a week, I am thinking that it is due to weakness in my muscles.  I am running faster more often these days, so it could have something to do with that as well. Suggestions include calf strengthening exercises including lots of wall push-ups and calf raises.

If it is due to other reasons most websites say not to run through the pain because it will only make it worse. Luckily since my comps start tomorrow, I will probably only be able to run three days this week. I plan to go long and slow, and hope to not feel much pain. (Although I did feel pain during an easy run last week). I will try to get on a bike on my off days, but since I get 24 hours to answer each set of questions, I most likely won't be able to spend any of those hours at the gym. But we will see how it goes.

I think I had this problem when I was running in college (about 6 years ago...I'm getting old!).  I think I blocked it out because I don't really remember the specific pain (although I think it may have been this same burning sensation), all I really remember is having to go to the trainer to get my calves worked on, having one trainer on each leg, and leaving in tears. (Don't worry, I didn't let them see me cry).

I'll update on Tuesday when I will be done 1/3 of my written exams! Yay!

I am the queen of calf trouble. It is caused in me by running on my toes. Up hill causes toe running. Racing really kills my calves too. Biking will use the calves and irritate them. Down dog is a good stretch. Give them a week to heal, running is ok, just take it easy and stop to stretch. Up hill hurts them more than down hill. IF they don't improve over the week, GO SEE A DOC. Mine get really tight and painful (down low is the worst) and then if I am not cautious, they will easily rupture. There are tons of good calf stretches on line. This info will only help if it is your calf muscle. I also like using a rolling pin on them too.

I am sorry for not telling you sooner that you did awesome on your race yesterday!! I think i need some of that ice cream you eat, then maybe i could keep up with you in a race :). For your calf problem, what i use is called a form roller. But i don't use foam i use a 3 1/2 PVC pipe, and it really works good. I would suggest before you use one to have some training on it. You can go to Fitness clubs to buy one and i think you can get some training on it through them. The one i bought was around $25.00 to 30.00 dollars and it works also works for shin splints. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.

Don't know when I'll be able to run again, so went as long as my body let me. Not bad on four hours sleep. Calf muscles felt fine... maybe it's all the stretching and the rest.

My comps started yesterday. I got to campus at 6:45 am, and did not leave until 5 am this morning.  I officially stayed up 24 hours, 22 of which were in my office. Gross! I got a little delirious around 2am, but Jason helped pull me through.

Day 2 of comps went well, I was done in 17 hours and got home around 1am, way more reasonable than 5am. I treated myself to a burger and fries on my way home. (Don't tell Sasha!). It was only like my second time getting fast food this year. Although to my disappointment my fries didn't have the bacon and cheese on them like I ordered.

Let's start off by saying I wasn't expecting much out of this race due to: lack of training in the past two weeks (because of comps and the Vegas conference), lack of sleep (I got in at midnight and was asleep a little before 2), jet lag, and the cold I got while in Vegas.  I also got some ear problems from the flight. The only positive was my legs MUST be rested after the last two weeks!

So I just kind of went out and went for it, having no real plans. I started off around 10th girl, and was in 4th by 2 miles and 3rd by 3 miles. I was running with girls I had never run with before and it was really exciting. Around mile 4 I started to worry about running out of gas, but I was able to keep my pace fairly well considering how hilly the course was. I got passed at around 4.5 by a super fast girl Sheryl (who runs 3-flat marathons) and tried to stay with her but she had a great finish. She ended up beating me by 20 seconds, and getting the last of the prize money (50 bucks... bummer!!).  But I am more than happy with my time, and completely relieved and thankful the race went so well when the odds were against me.  My legs felt pretty much perfect, so I think the unavoidable rest the past 2 weeks did them well!

Splits: 6:27, 6:53, 6:44, 6:50, 6:52, 6:29. Not as consistent as the last race but pretty good! Everyone's times were slow due to the tough course and humidity, heat, and wind, and I think I had a good showing.

It's great to be back in Tallahassee!

Hooray for not being too busy to cook dinner! I made myself a scrumptious dinner tonight and decided to share. As usual everything I make is fairly healthy, easy, and few ingredients.

Italian Tilapia and Spaghetti:

Ingredients: Spaghetti noodles, spaghetti sauce, tilapia, mozzarella cheese, spices.

Preheat oven to 350. Place tilapia in foil-lined baking dish and spice to liking. I used garlic salt, onion powder and topped with some bread crumbs to add a little crunch. Bake tilapia until almost done (about 8 minutes if they are thin like the pieces I have).

Meanwhile, heat up spaghetti sauce and cook the noodles.

Remove tilapia from oven and cover each piece with a little spaghetti sauce (about 2 tbl) and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Put back in oven and cook for a few more minutes, until cheese is melted and fish is finished. Plate with spaghetti and enjoy! Yum. I add some cheese on my spaghetti too :)

Strawberry Angel Food Cake:

Ingredients: Angel food cake mix, strawberry pie filling

In bowl mix the cake mix and pie filling with a spoon. Put in ungreased 13x9 pan and cook according to box directions (don't add any other liquid though).  Mine says 350 for 35 or so minutes, but I think it cooks a little faster. When cooled you can top with cool whip or fresh fruit. I think it's great plain though, and FAT FREE!! Everyone loves it. You can also use a can of crushed pineapple instead, or even pumpkin with some pumpkin pie spice. I think I want to try that next, I love me some pumpkin!

I decided to take a shot at joggling. Just for the fun of it. But first I need to learn how to juggle. This morning I got really close to being able to juggle three balls. I think I'll be able to get this down in a few weeks. Right now I can juggle them all twice before dropping them. Then I guess I have to add the running part, which I am sure will be tough. It gets really frustrating at times. Anyway, be back later after intervals tonight.

It's later, and I officially have my first joggling injury. I think from bending over too much to pick up dropped balls I'm really sore in my... bending over muscles (I don't fully understand what that means either, but it's true).

2 easy, fartleked around for 3 miles, 1 easy. I enjoyed this no-expectations fartlek... I just ran hard for as long as I felt and then took however long I needed to recover. Sure it wasn't as good of a workout as intervals would have been, but sometimes a run you really enjoy is better for the body than one that is really hard.

I had my oral defense today (of my written comps) and I passed, so I am officially a PhD candidate, and ABD (all but dissertation)! Yay! At least now I don't feel bad for letting my running suffer so much because of school; it makes it a little more worth it.

I have a 5k tomorrow, which at the beginning of the year I thought would be a chance at under 19 minutes, but because of school and other circumstances resulting in lack of training, I will now will be happy with under 20. But once again, my comps put this all into perspective and I hope just to enjoy the race no matter what. It's the second biggest race in Tallahassee and should be a ton of fun. I even have an after-race party to go to, and then an Easter celebration with my young adults church group. Should be a fun, busy day. Hope everyone enjoys their Easter weekend!

Congratulations, that is an accomplishment worth the sacrifice of running. I wouldn't be a good professor if I didn't remind you that you still have some work to do after you get back from some well-deserved R&R (and racing)!

Happy Easter!

I accomplished all of my goals for this race: go under 20, don't be too hard on myself, and have fun. With my lack of training I was still able to run my second fastest 5k ever, which makes me really excited to see what will happen in the future when I have the time to train hard.

I attempted to recruit a bunch of girls to join in intervals and the track club, which will obviously mean more competition, but in most circumstances I'd rather run a good time than get a good place. I ran the entire race with Micah from the track club and it was a lot of fun, it almost felt like I was back on my college team. I also tried to recruit her and another girl on the track club to run the Disney marathon with me in January. It would be great to have people to train with!

As for race details, we ran negative splits, mostly because we went out a little too slow (6:26). I was okay with it though because I feel like I definitely used everything I had. The after party was at the Palace Saloon, and there was an after after party at a guys house, both of which were pretty fun, and I used to kind of celebrate my comps.

Now I get to celebrate Easter with my bunny :)

Easter Bunny Story (Warning: My family is weird):

When we were little apparently my parents put raisins in the front yard to make it look like Easter Bunny poo, and we loved it. My older brother (27 years old) is very young at heart and to this day loves telling poop jokes. It's become a big joke in my family. So for Easter I mailed my family a care package with candy and other goodies... and sent my brother a baggie containing some goodies from my bunny. The baggie had a place where you write the contents, so I of course wrote "Easter Bunny Poo." Weird, I know, but he loved it and called me all excited about getting poop as a present in the mail.

My parents hire a bunch of family members to work as secretaries in our tax office during tax season. My cousin Tasha was working the day the poo arrived (Thursday), and she is a complete germaphobe. So my brother decided to put it on her desk (still in the baggie of course) and say I sent it to her. She actually got really excited about it, and decided to use it for her kids who are at that stage where they love gross things like poop and puke. They usually leave a carrot out for the EB and eat half of it. This time, they also left a trail...

So my Lewis actually got to play Easter Bunny today!

On an unrelated note, I had an interesting experience today. On Easter morning my church has a sunrise service at 7am at the downtown park, where homeless people often go after getting kicked out of the shelter in the morning. My church group (about 8 people) decided to get together to give them lots of fruit and bagels and juice. So we made bags and handed them out (we made 30 bags, were able to get rid of about 20, and then left 10 behind in the gazebo in the park).

I went back to check the status of the bags, and 5 gentlemen were sitting in the gazebo. I said good morning to them, and they were very interested in talking to me. So I stayed for a little, they told me about themselves, how they feel about Chelsea Clinton (I think they thought I said Chelsea instead of Kelsey) and some of their hobbies. One of them likes to read, and showed me some of the books he is reading. Another said his glasses broke so he can't read anymore and joked "his arms are too short" (because he can't hold the book far enough away). After I went back to church for a while, I was on my way home, and couldn't get over the fact that he couldn't even read if he wanted to. I stopped by Dollar General, picked him up some reading glasses (only 6 dollars) and a case so they would last longer. I also got some crackers and gum for the others (I figured if they don't brush their teeth it could help keep them a little healthier).  I went back to deliver my new purchases and they said "Chelsea is back!" The man who I gave the glasses to smiled and said "I can read again." The one who loves to read (who I just gave crackers too) hugged me.

I had odd conflicting feelings during the whole thing. During the actual church service in the park only one homeless man was present. He sat there right next to the pastor the whole time. During part of the service the pastor talked about Jesus' suffering, and different types of suffering now in the world (e.g. cancer, homelessness, addiction). When I visited the gentlemen to check the status of the bags, the one present through the service told me that he was there, and that we were talking about him- with the cancer, homelessness and addiction, although he is "no longer an addict, but an alcoholic". It's tough to see things like this and know that I can't really do anything to help them turn their lives around, I can only help them fill their stomach.  All five men at the gazebo were already drinking (it was 10am), and one was obviously very very drunk. He was the only one that was at all rude. He was very beat up, black eyes and scrapes, and apparently got in a fight with a woman the night before. The other men said they weren't letting him drink anymore for a little while, and that they had cut him off. He dropped an "F bomb" while I was there, and the other men yelled at him for cursing. Except when one yelled at him he said "don't use that g-d word" and he felt realllly bad and looked at me with wide eyes and apologized. I said it was okay, but the others said it was not. So I said, well I forgive you, and he seemed to accept that.

The conflicting feelings come from the fact that if they weren't drinking they could have afforded all of the things I bought, although I do not think they should go without glasses and food because they are alcoholics.  If alcoholism and mental illness were not part of the picture I would feel more able to make a change in their lives.  I wish there was more I could do, but I feel pretty helpless with it all. There was that article in Runner's World about the girl who ran with the homeless people, but that is obviously impossible to do until they are sober (at least in the morning).  For those of you who didn't read the article, her program was very successful, made the men feel like equals with the doctors and lawyers and other people that they were racing, and many of them sobered up and ended up getting jobs, finishing a half marathon, and improving their lives.  I spoke to some people in my track club about it and they are very, very interested in starting a group like that, but I just don't think I'd have the time and resources to accomplish this during my time in Tallahassee.

The man who loves reading said he reads in the gazebo every morning, so I hope to take him a new book some time soon, and maybe some breakfast every once in a while so I can use that time to hopefully provide a positive influence in his life.  Don't worry, I won't go alone (I promised Jason) and I will be careful.

If anyone has any ideas on how to do more I would love to hear it.  I think my church group could really make a difference if we new the right way to do it.

Okay, your first story was hilarious!!! What a funny family, and what a funny gift to send!

The second story makes me sad, too. Homelessness is a very sad thing. You never know the circumstances of their lives and I think it is just up to us to help when and where we can and not to judge. I think you did that! It was very thoughtful of you to go out of your way to help (and the rest of your church group). Just keep smiling and bringing joy when you can. And I think bringing a book to this guy would be very nice (the bible is a great idea, Rattletrap).

Thanks for lifting my spirits with that story!!!! Have a good week.

From Barry on Sun, Apr 12, 2009 at 20:32:38 from 75.174.41.226

I loved the first story that was really funny. The second reminded me of a scripture about giving someone a glass of water it is like you are giving it to Me (Jesus). So even though you feel like you are not doing much, you are doing a lot. I wish i would go and feed the homeless. If you are wanting to do more, all you have to do is pray and ask God and he will show you what He wants you to do. I was watching a sermon on TV this morning from Joel Osteen and he said a prayer that really spoke to me. I will tell you what it is and suggest that you pray it every morning. I really think you will see God move even more in your life and help you with wanting to do more for the homeless. This is the Prayer

Father thank you for favor in my life.

Father thank you for causing me to be in the right place at the right time.

The Wisdom to make good decisions.

Your Grace to handle any challenges.

Your strength to over come any adversity and your faith to believe for big things.

May God bless you in the work with the homeless. Also, may i ask what church you are involved with?

On Boston weekend I feel dumb talking about a teensy 5k but I will anyway! Went really well, it was perfect weather but the course was hilly and perhaps a little long so I am very proud of my time. There was no male competition there so I was only about 15 seconds away from winning it all! I really wanted it but couldn't catch the two guys in front of me.

My splits were something crazy, like 6:16, 6:15, 5:56, and then my watch said I ran 3.17. Another woman's said about 3.2 as well. So I don't really know what happened, but I would be shocked if that last split was right. I did feel like I ran hard but that looks pretty impossible.

This is the first race in a while where I was completely out of breath the whole time... which I am taking as a positive because it means I pushed myself hard. I knew I'd be close to a PR and raced the clock at the finish to no avail.

I am especially happy also because I worked out hard this week and it looks like it didn't hurt my race much.

Oh, and I won a plant. Sweet!

It's a disgusting 82 degrees in my apartment right now. I like to test my willpower with the air conditioner.  It hit 90 degrees yesterday (outside not inside), meaning the hot, uncomfortable running weather is coming quickly. Booo.

WDW is a good marathon, I had a good time running it this past January. Mostly flat and fast! Good luck with heat (we are having almost the opposite, 25 degrees this morning!).

A few months ago I read on someone's blog that they like to try to get a little walking in after each run (if it is you let me know!). Ever since then I have successfully walked about half a mile after every single run. I'm proud that I've kept up with it and it's actually become somewhat enjoyable.  On an out and back I always make sure to go out further to get my walk in.  Today on my post-run walk some guy yelled out the window and told me he loved me. What a nice thing to say... I think.

Whereas I don't think it was me that mentioned walking, I have been trying to heed the advice of a much more accomplished ultrarunner than myself by incorporating a little uphill walking after long runs. According to Greg Gearhart (a great guy, venerable ultrarunner, and former sub-2:30 marathoner out of Clinton, MS), a good way to put the finishing touches on looooooong-distance training is to finish up a long run and then hop on a treadmill at full incline for 15 minutes or so of walking to simulate walking up hills late in a race.

maybe a little off-topic, but i thought i'd share anyway...

Haha, like I said, I'm not allowed to do that. And that is one rule I don't need to break.

That's interesting about the uphill walking. I wonder if my no-hill walking has any positive effects. Since I don't stretch I figure it couldn't hurt.

This workout felt horrible. I haven't hit a wall like that in a while, and was very close to not finishing. But I finished, although embarassingly far behind the rest of my group. I guess some times you just have to suck up your pride. I think I was extra tired because I ran about 5 seconds faster than normal on the first two, so was put in group one. Since I was in the back of that group, I got 2 minutes less rest than usual. Anyway, it ended up with me going about 20 seconds slower on the last one... but I finished.

Grand Prix race this weekend, so I am going to take it easy the rest of the week. Judging by today's intervals my legs reallllly need it.

9 days til storm chasing.

It's Wednesday but I decided to do a little research on my 1200s to make myself feel better. About 2 months ago I ran 4:50, 4:44, 4:37, 4:27.  Yesterday I ran 4:25, 4:25, 4:31, 4:4x. So not as bad as I thought, especially with the shorter break, it just felt bad.

I feel your pain. Yesterday I did a fartlek workout and felt awful afterward, but I also realize that a couple of months ago I would never have been able to survive the last couple of sets. Oh well, such is the mind of a runner...

By the way, you should do the SweetH20 50k just west of Atlanta on May 30. You had mentioned wanting to try a 50k at some point, and with good trails and a couple of solid creek crossings, that one looks like fun. I registered for it last night and am curious to see what the course has to offer...

From Barry on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 12:20:16 from 67.61.234.251

I would like to make a suggestion to you if you do not mind. My suggestion would be to take an ice bath Friday for about 10 to 20 minutes. I think that will help your legs to feel fresh for the race. I usually take a 20 minute ice bath every week and i usually feel really fresh for a race or even a long run. I hope this helps.

What does storm chasing entail?

From kelsey on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 21:27:05 from 98.230.3.218

Nevels- I actually saw you had a tough workout but didn't have time to comment. I guess some times we have to put thing in perspective and realize we're just pushing ourselves harder. I also learned a lot about my limits, which needed to be done. I wish I could do the 50k (really bad actually) but I'll be out of town. Eventually I will meet up with you at one of these in our region!

Kelli and Mike- Yup, storm chasing! This will be my 4th year and I love it. We go for two weeks in the Great Plains but end up all over the US because we travel on our off days. We actually spent two nights in Moab last year... so there is a chance I could be near all of the Utah people! I plan on letting y'all know a few days in advance (if possible) and we could possibly meet up. Of course we may not even get that far wast, it's all up to the weather. So to answer your question Mike, we basically do what we have to do to see some cool storms. We camp some nights, most nights in hotels, and live out of our van. It is a ton of fun. I plan on blogging the trip on here and hopefully posting some great storm pictures!

From Kelli on Fri, May 01, 2009 at 00:18:08 from 71.219.69.60

Just like the movie! I do not want any storms, but if a storm blows you in that would be cool! I know they had some massive ones at Lake Powell just barely, a bunch of boats sunk.

Race: Tails and Trails 5k (3.1 Miles) 00:18:58, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.603.036.63

My best friend is graduating today so I don't have much time to write up a report. But don't get too excited, the course was short (3.03) so this doesn't count as my first sub-19 5k. I need to see 3.1 on my Garmin to make it official! I will come back later with a way too long race report, because this morning was pretty eventful. To add some suspense, let's just say I was crying before the race (but not in a really bad way, if that makes sense).

Okay, so here is my morning. Last year the race was a little long (like a minute) so I knew the race wouldn't be one to go for time, more so just to run hard and try to get grand prix points.  It is for the Humane Society and I knew they would be "advertising" the shelter dogs but I guess I didn't realize what that would entail. To go to the bathroom you had to go through all of the animals... the cats, the bunnies, the dogs, all of them. So needless to say I sobbed the entire way to the bathroom.

So the race starts, and it is about 70% on trails, which are of course.... trails... sand, roots, you know. My first mile was in 6:03, which I am really happy about, it's about time I get a good start. And I never really died per say, but I definitely got really tired at some points. It was a pretty flat course, a few teensie hills, and then the finish was on top of a monster hill. It was huge, and I had no idea the finish was right at the top or I would have pushed it a little bit harder. So I finished with a little bit left. I raced the clock for sub-19, just in case, but looked down at my watch and it said 3.03 miles. I guess there is a chance it is right, Garmin's do go crazy in the woods some times, but I find it easier to just deny my time and try again next time. Kinda stinks though because it's the second week in a row I would have PRed if the course was measure correctly (last time long, this time short).   But I did win, and got 30 grand prix points out of it, which I didn't expect at all!

After the race there was a ton of food, and they had a stage that they were taking some of the dogs on and introducing them to the crowd.  I hope some of them got adopted. Some of them were super cool dogs. If I had a yard I would have taken home a truck full. I took one for a walk and I loved her. There were at least a dozen I wanted. The shelter said they get 60-70 animals a day... and they only had 60-70 animals. Which makes it super sad to think about the others that don't get adopted, and don't get to live a full life :( So sad. I love that I love animals so much, but they also break my heart.  There were only 2 bunnies, and one was a female lop, white with brown spots, the I knew Lewis would just loooove to snuggle with. I was one storm chase away from adopting her, but I can't get a new bunny just to take to Jason's apartment and make him watch her, especially not knowing if she is well-behaved or potty trained like Lewis. But if she is still there when I get back in June she will probably be mine. It breaks my heart thinking of her being in that cage, but at least she has food and a cool, dry place to live.

Anyway, enough about the animals, I could go on forever. As for the running is concerned I think today proved I can go under 19 (since I got this time on the trails). I finished right behind a guy I know that goes consistently under 19, so it is looking good. Also, most people went slower on this race than the others, and I actually ran faster.  Next 5k is May 23 in Mississippi (between storm chasing and Greece), so if the days is right (and the course accurate) maybe that will be my day.

I'll have to see if anyone from the track club actually measured the course. If so, then I will be willing to accept my time.

OH MY HECK!!!! How on earth do you run so fast, and on trails (and off). Trail running scares the begeebees out of me, it seems dangerous.

Congrats on the time, and it sure does too count! I am betting the Garmin was off, not the race!

So, in Utah you have to jump through some major hoops to adopt a pet. We really have wanted to get a little dog since ours died 2 years ago, but it is all so complicated! They need to have a race like that here and i would go home with a few---I DO have a fence and a yard and a bunch of kids who want some dogs!

From Nevels on Sun, May 03, 2009 at 19:32:09 from 131.204.15.93

Haha, thanks everyone, y'all are hysterical.

I do HATE chopping onions though, Mike, I swear they make my hands smell for weeks.

Kelli, you would have come home with a truck full of running partners if you were there! And I agree, trails are super scary. I don't know what Nevels et al. are thinking. My eyes get blurry from staring at the ground so hard, and then I can't see all of the roots. And the sand is really scary too.

We drove to Dallas last night and stayed in a pretty nice hotel (won't happen often) which actually had treadmills. I didn't run though because I don't want to over do it after running so far yesterday (relative to my other runs lately).

We plan on heading up north a little to chase this afternoon, although it isn't looking very good. It also isn't looking good for the next few days, and the long range models show bad news for the rest of the trip. But I guess it only takes one good storm to make it a successful trip.

Yesterday we got on a storm that supposedly dropped a tornado, but it we were in no position to get to that part of the storm.  We did go near the core though and experience a little hail and what not.  Drove to Brownwood, TX where we spent the night. No pics yet. Looks like today we will do some tourist stuff nearby and home something pops up later in the afternoon.

Ran through town around the hotel, maybe a little more than 6. Lots of people cleaning up their yards, picking up what is left of their trees.  Some flooded roads.  Ran at 7:15 and it was crazy humid.  Moderate run with some surges and a fast start and finish. Ran okay but didn't feel great. Probably a little tired from Thursday.

I actually realized this morning we haven't gotten any ice cream yet since we've been out here. May need to get that done today.

The tourist traps of Brownwood are pretty much the same as here in the great city of Alpine. It pretty much comes down to sitting in parks playing frisbee and watching the radar for 6 hours.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

We chased a storm around Marathon, TX yesterday. There was no hope of tornadoes due to lack of rotation, but it was still a severe thunderstorm in terms of hail and heavy wind. We punched the core of the storm, parked the van under a picnic table roof on the side of the road (harder than it sounds) and watched the hail come down.  We probably saw a few gulf ball sized stones, and when the storm passed we drove down the street and it looked like it had snowed. The road was covered with about 2 inches of hail for about a mile. I'll try to put up a picture later.

Spent the night in Alpine, TX. Woke up and ran 8 miles around town and through the Sul Ross State University campus.  Probably headed to Colorado (and maybe Utah) in the next day or so.

Marginal risk again today, probably some more of what we had yesterday. We did get to see some cool storm structure and some hail and wind, so it's better than nothing.

We very illegally hiked and waded through the Rio Grande yesterday so that I could step foot in Mexico for the first time. It was actually somewhat tretcherous, and I just kept thinking about how mad I would be if I broke my ankle while doing it. But we made it, and I have officially been to Mexico.  No storms.

Ran around the parking lot of our hotel in Midland, Texas this morning. Tuesday is interval day so I found a stretch of industrial road next to the hotel that was about 450 meters long or so. Did 3 x up and back and 3 x one way. The times don't matter at all, but they were 3:49. 3:37, 3:30, 1:39, 1:32, 1:28.  Not bad (I guess?), but I was dead after the last one. Which is a good thing.

From kelsey on Fri, May 22, 2009 at 15:58:42 from 75.65.234.176

Not yet, which I regret! I started feeling better and forgot about it. But I am looking into that again today.

3.5 miles of running in partial force calf pain is too much for me.

You won't regret it. I'm kind of bummed out because I forgot to bring mine camping with me :(

And in due time, tweeked my calf today :( Probably has something to do with all the tightness in them.

I am officially in between storm chasing and my Greece trip, and I figured running a race between would be a great work out and motivator to keep at it til I get back to Tallahassee. I am in Mississippi, and I am "undefeated" in my races here in Jackson so that adds a little excitement as well.

Long story short, the course ran a little long on my Garmin (3.22) and everyone I asked had at least 3.16. So that is a good 15-20 seconds. I normally wouldn't care, but I really want a new PR and I am having trouble getting it because all the courses are a little off, making it tough. But it will happen one day. I still don't know if I count the sub-19 from a little while back. I think I will if I never do it again :)

There was a hill named "heartbreak hill" on the course and it made me never want to run Boston, because it hurt like heck and I can only imagine how it would feel during a marathon. Guess I'll find out in less than a year.

One boy finished the one mile fun run on crutches because he has a debilitating disease. Jason and I both cried, it was really inspirational. I need to watch him run before every race.

All in all, this was a good workout and I got a cool piece of local pottery.

I did, however, pull my calf a little walking around after the race. I was still able to get my cool down in and my other calf actually caused the most pain. When I stopped my cool down I felt my legs tighten up instantly (and I was only doing like 9:20 pace). The one I tweeked is hurting when I walk right now. It's higher up, towards the inside almost to my knee. This is different than where they normally hurt. So I need to keep stretching today, and I can't wait for my "stick" to get here. This puts a lot of pressure on you ratteltrap, I am looking for a little miracle!

Burt, what bet do they have? Interesting. We don't have a bet going though... Rattletrap advised me getting "the stick" to see if it helps with my calf pain.

Oh wow, Adam, I didn't even realize it was the same time. And both races were after having lesser mileage due to life getting in the way. Weird!

From Burt on Sat, May 23, 2009 at 18:50:16 from 98.167.151.26

Ah, I see. So if the stick doesn't work, blame it on Rattletrap. He's a big boy, he can take it.

Eric as you know, is from Mexico and Rocket from Argentina. They're both going to do 10k's and whoever has the slowest time has to wear the flag of the other country in their next race. Something like that. It keeps evolving. There's been talk about head bands and skirts, too.

From Nevels on Tue, May 26, 2009 at 13:14:23 from 131.204.15.93

Congrats on another win, and fret not; you'll destroy those PR's soon (especially if you run enough races in Jackson - they've got some pretty flat courses around)

Nice job on the race, Kelsey! You're putting together a very solid season and working over the competition out there. As a fellow stick user, I don't know if you'll actually love the device (unless you enjoy good old-fashioned pain more than I do, which is highly probable), but you will love the results.

Recovery Run. My calf (the left one, not the one I "tweeked") hurt to the touch and I thought there was no way it would make it. Much to my surprise, it didn't hurt at all, just a little tightness towards the end.  Glad I was able to get the miles in.

I planned on doing 1 x 1600 and 8 x 400 on the track, but 800 meters into my workout a man came and told me I had to leave because they were locking the gates of the track.  I got reallllly frustrated but found a neighborhood nearby and did another 800 (estimated) and then did 8 x 85 second intervals. All in all it turned out pretty well.

I saw a goose with a broken leg at the park where I warmed up, so I plan on calling animal control tomorrow to help the poor guy out :(

The park where we run is filled with chicken, roosters, geese, deformed ducks, you name it! There's always something to entertain us. Today Ryan kicked a big frog by accident when it jumped on her foot. The other day we saw a turtle laying it's eggs in a hole then bury them and walk away, then saw a racoon family living in the gutter. Very entertaining!

Pretty well-paced run.  Calf pain pretty bad at mile 2, I think it's because I started off at a fairly quick pace, and my calves need a 9 minute mile (or 3) before they can get into it.  Pain was much more dull by mile 4.

I am writing this a few days later because I haven't had much internet access, but I have been sick and severely jet lagged. I actually did this run after 4 nights of less than 4 hours sleep each, at sun rise because I had been up since 4:30 and couldn't sleep. This was as far as I could go. There are a lot of roosters here. You learn that when you are running when they are waking up!

6 with a bunch of fellow hurricane researchers in Corfu.  Very sleep deprived, but I just finished my presentation this morning (it went amazing!!!) which gave me the energy to run.  Moderate pace, lots of hills. I was really tired, but I think it was more due to sleep and sickness. There is no way I could lose that much in a few days. I can't wait to get back into my normal running routine.

Won't be able to run for a few days.  Flying to Athens tonight, seeing the Parthenon and probably sleeping in the airport. Will be back in Mississippi Saturday night, which in my time would be Sunday morning. Hopefully I adapt back faster than I adapted here. I got 6 hours of sleep last night, which was the most I have had in a week.

At my layover in the Athens airport. We are spending the night here because it's too expensive to stay at a hotel.  It's 4:30 though, and I've only slept an hour and it looks like I am done. Uncomfortable air port benches and a constant cough don't make for good sleep.  Hopefully I will get some good sleep on the plane. I wish there was a shower in here somewhere, then I would use up some time by going for a run.

I got news yesterday that my grandmother passed away, so I got my flight changed and I am heading to Maryland.  Another good reason why I am longing for a soothing run.  As of right now I am allowing myself to be in denial so that I can deal with the traveling.  Then when I am home with my family I can take care of everything.

Thanks everyone for your comments and messages about my grandmother. It has been tough but my family is doing well. I have decided to stick around Baltimore until Monday since I do not often have no major school obligations and some one who does not mind watching the pets. So I will miss my grand prix race this weekend, which will probably eventually cost me the overall win, but I never expected to get it anyway and will be more than happy to settle for second or third.

Got my first workout in in 2 weeks. I was a little over zealous and planned on doing a 9 mile run with a 3 mile tempo in the middle (I figure I need speed and distance really bad at this point). Bad idea. I did my easy 3, did about 2.25 hard, and then just jogged home, for a total of 6. Still much better than nothing. I only have track meets coming up, until a 5k in 2.5 weeks, so I have a little time to get it back together. I may run a 5k here in Baltimore in Saturday as a workout.

Small grand prix event for a track club in Baltimore. I decided to do this as a workout, and at $6 it was well worth it. I got a  $15 gift card to panera bread, and ate an awesome cinnamon sugar bagel.  Words can't describe.... it was almost like a donut. I plan on buying some of those with my gift card. Yummmm.

Semi-hilly, two-lap course. Miles 1 and 3 were uphill, 2 and 4 were downhill.

6:45 (second uphill portion... ouch!)

I am pretty happy with this, considering I basically did a two-week taper. The McMillan race calculator puts me at a 19:56 5k, which isn't too bad but not nearly where I wanted to be. I tried my best to stay in shape while gone, and the first three weeks I did a great job, including speed workouts and distance runs. The last two weeks consited of major jet lag, sickness, and other events which caused me to miss a lot of runs. But I get back to Tallahassee next week and I'll get right back into the swing of things. Hopefully it doesn't take me too long to get back to where I was. Nothing a few interval sessions and tempo runs can't cure!

It was 97 during my race, with a heat index of about 105. Hence the short warm up and cool down. Anything longer than a 400 would have been miserable.

It was tons of fun sprinting again, I actually got pretty competitive with the other girls once our race started :) That's the way the 400 is supposed to be though. I am super happy with my time, I just wanted under 70. Next week is the 800, and I feel lots of pressure because that was my race.

I was just proud of myself for getting out of bed to do this run, since I didn't get home from the track meet til 9 last night. I got up at 6:30 and the heat index was already 85... although it felt warmer because it is soooooo humid right now. I'm not running again until Sunday, but at least I am running with a big group of people, and they put water and gatorade out on the course.

I wish when I typed in my mileage in addition to "slow miles" and "fast miles" there were "running scared miles" because between races and runs like today I seem to have a lot of those. I think today I clocked about 3 or 4 scared miles.

Today's run started off warm, but great. I went with a group of people doing a long run on some trails I have never run on. They were doing 15, and although I know I can do 15, I also know I shouldn't, since my mileage the past two weeks were only ~18 miles. So I decided to come out and do their first 5 with them, and then turn around for a 10 miler.

The first five were enjoyable, ignoring the flies that kept biting me and trying to fly up my nose even with the layers and layers of bug spray I put on, as recommended by Nancy.  I played close attention to all turns so I could find my way back but I was still worried, as I have a horrible sense of direction.

So I turn around and naturally pick up pace, since it is more boring on your own I just kind of wanted to get done. At this time (around 9am) the heat index was already in the mid-90s. Then comes a decision... one trail where I really didn't know which way to turn. I turn left and go about 1/2 mile and it started to not look at all familiar. So I decide to head back and check out the other way. I go the other way and it seems a little more right. But then another decision... another right or left... this time I choose right, since left didn't work for me last time. The trails are all beginning to look the same and I really start freaking out. I kept thinking, what would happen if I get lost. Even if I have to add a 1/2 hour to my run, I could be in serious trouble due to lack of fitness and the extreme heat.  I figured I needed to just go with it, or go back to where I know the trail was right and just wait for everyone else.  I kept going and I was about 1/2 a mile away from a panic attack and tears when a biker was coming from the other direction. He was probably overwhelmed with my excitement to see him, and I asked him if I am headed towards the Crump Road entrance. He said he had no idea, but if I cross a street I will be on gravel. I said, "Great, that's where I need to be!!" And thanked him and kept heading straight, When I got to where I really knew where I was going I had gotten to my ten mile mark so I decided to walk my way in.  There were a few other turns but I was pretty sure I was going the right way. Around 9 minutes I started to get really nervous because I knew within the next few minutes I would either be at the car, or have to turn around and try something else. When I saw the hill that leads to the parking I through my arms up in victory. By the time I finished the heat index was 100. I can't believe everyone else is still running... gross!!!

Moral of the story: I will never run on trails I don't know when I know I will end up being on my own. If for some reason I do this to myself again, I will take a fuel belt with water, gatorade, and my eell phone. I haven't gotten that confused when running for about 7 years when my friends and I got really lost in the woods and actually had to knock on doors and get someone to drive us to the car. Scary and no fun!

Glad you're ok...I grew up in FL and have no idea how you can stay committed in such a brutal climate. Baseball was my thing...90 feet at a time. Keep up the good work and watch out for those "buggy, muggy" trails. btw- sorry to say, "Go Gators!"

Quite and adventure...

It reminds me of a training run I did for the Mt. Mist a couple of years ago. It was only my second year of running the race, and I hadn't been on the trails in quite a while. We were running the second half of the course, and I started with a group of guys who knew their way around pretty well, but after an hour or so of running, I fell behind on a relatively technical section of trail and lost track of them. I lost about 15 or 20 more minutes after taking a wrong turn and not realizing it for a mile or so, and at that point I knew there was no catching up to the other guys. I managed to stay on course from vague memory until the last 10k. I made a huge descent, but then somehow got lost down in a valley. I took at least one more wrong turn and was thoroughly lost. At that point I just ran on the trail I was on until I heard a traffic, and the trail dumped me out on a road at the base of the mountain. Unfortunately for me, we were all parked at the top, so I decided to stay on the road and head back up the mountain.

The group I was with said that they kept going back into the park and seeing my truck in the parking lot for an hour or two after everyone else was done, all the while wondering where I was.

After talking with several folks (who know the trails very well) about where I turned, to this day, none of us has a clue where I went...

From Kelsey on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 15:47:18 from 128.186.154.139

Barry, I honestly have no idea. I know I picked it up while I was scared just because I wanted to get out of there. I wish I was wearing my GPS just to see it, I bet a graph of my speed would show my emotions!

Rockness, that last comment doesn't even deserve a response. :)

Nevels, yours sounds way worse than mine, just because I know your run was more intense. It's pretty scary when you start thinking, "what if I never make it out of here." A little dramatic maybe, but still scary. I just really wanted to get out before people had to come back and look for me, I am sure you understand the feeling. This is why I stick to the streets, they have names!

Actually, I know why. It's because he referred to me as a sub-19 minute 5ker. Although I would never call myself that, it definitely has a ring to it!!

6x800s on the track. Ranged from 3:02 to 3:08. Considerably slower than my usual 800s, but I haven't done a speed workout in a month or so and when we started the heat index was about 100, so I'll take it. I convinced my brain that it wasn't that hot, but my legs weren't hearing it.

Speedwork in the heat? That's just brutal. Good job!

From Nevels on Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 10:53:28 from 75.143.88.18

I'm with April; just getting out to do the speedwork in this heat is laudable. Not to mention that the heat will naturally slow you down (i.e. slower running for a given effort with respect to the same run in cooler temps) due to your body's effort to keep you cool, which takes a surprising amount of energy...

Solid speedwork; good job.

This race was a ton of fun! I knew I would be disappointed over 2:40, and would love to go under 2:30. (My PR in college was 2:23). I decided to go out slow, and my first lap was in 77 seconds. I actually heard someone yelling at me for sandbagging during my first lap :) I still don't know who that was. Then right at the line leading to the second lap I "took off," passed about 8 people (which I admit was kind of fun), and ran a 72. I realize that I probably could have run faster if I went out, and this is kind of a sissy way to race, but I really enjoy it! I love finishing strong and not being miserable during the race, and especially love not hitting a wall. I think I'll sacrifice a few seconds every once in a while for the sake of enjoying myself :)

Just what you were waiting for... yet another race report by me.

This was a grand prix event, located on St George Island, almost 2 hours from Tallahassee. It started at 7pm under the hot, hot sun. Yuck.

Not many details... it was super hot, and my time was bad but with the heat and head wind I didn't expect anything better than that really. My main "competition" (she's actually a friend I love racing with) missed the start, so there were no other girls around me, but ran mainly with a guy who I run some tempos with.  I didn't place as well in the men as I normally do though, so that shows I'm not quite in the shape I was a month or two ago.  I'll get there though. And I am perfectly happy in the mean time running 19:45s on "bad" days... after all, I would have killed for this time last year.

Pretty much just glad this one is over! Is it Autumn yet???

Splits were something like 6:15 (felt ehhh), 6:33 (headwind, hurting), 6:22 (hot, hurting, wind at back)

I ran this similar to my 800, went out super slow (2:57 first half) and then raced the second half of the race. It really made it more enjoyable. Plus Jason got to watch and I got to show off my new bling :)

12x400 was a staple in high school for me, and, if I remember correctly, it put some pretty good pep in my step for 5k's, 3200's and 1600's, so you should blow that 5k away...

I am super happy with this race! I thought I would struggle to run 19:45. My friend Micah came, and we hadn't run with each other since May since I have been traveling so much, but she is getting to be in really good shape. There was also a girl from the FSU track team there. I knew Micah really wanted to beat the other girl, and I decided to just stay with them until I couldn't. That point ended up being around 9 laps in I think. The FSU girl ended up beating Micah by 5 seconds which stinks.

I have 400 splits, but we went out in 6:08 then did something like a 6:11, then I died a little. But this is the hardest I have actually run in a while, and I am really happy with it!

Congratulations on a trustworthy PR. I think you have the speed to run an OTQ in the marathon if you put in the miles.

Right now, the 5 K is a little off, but it is because your mileage is low. Which is why you die in the third mile. Your true 5 K pace is probably around 5:50 per mile. But with mileage 5 K will get where it should, and so will other distances, including the marathon.

And thanks for your input Sasha. I look forward to gradually increasing my mileage going into my next marathon to see what I can do! Hopefully I will get some shorter race PRs along the way.

From Nevels on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 16:34:53 from 131.204.15.93

I don't know if you're interested, or even if I can help at all, but I have a friend on faculty here in Auburn who is trying to get her third OTQ marathon and wants me to train with her to help with pacing/motivation/etc. She keeps her mileage typically pretty high (usually slightly higher than mine), but I think we're going to start the real hard-core marathon training in December, with the target race being the Grandma's Marathon in June 2010, with a goal time of sub-2:45. I admittedly am not an expert at fast marathoning, but I could let you know what it is that she's doing. Just a thought...

I think I may get my summer track award at the meet tomorrow, so I am nerdely excited. I don't care what it is, I'll still love it :) Although I hope it's not a trophy or plaque. And I hope I can eat it.

The track meet is just for fun (no grand prix event), so I'm thinking of doing the 800 immediately followed by the 2 mile. Then back to Thursday night tempo runs next week.

Can not wait to hear what the PRIZE is!!!!

They changed the race schedule around, meaning I ended up running a 400 and then the 2 mile. I ran the 400 in about 64 or 65 and won by 1/1000 of a second! It was super close. I ran so hard that I honestly thought my quads were going to rip off or I was going to fall down. It was crazy. When I finished I had tunnel vision. It was only a second or two faster than my 400 a couple weeks ago, but apparently that made a big difference. Probably because I went out faster so I was dead.

Then I had a 3 minute break before the two mile. I knew I was in trouble because my legs were all messed up. It was horrible! I ran 13:07, a minute slower than two weeks ago. I didn't think one 400 could mess me up that bad but it did.

Today was the ice cream social since it was the last track meet, but you never get any if you do the distance event. So instead we went out for ice cream after and I got a brownie sundae with cheesecake ice cream. It was unbelievable. It made me realize how much I really love real whipped cream. And hot fudge. And a brownie and ice cream.

My prize for the summer track series was a 10 dollar gift card to the local running shoe store. Although I can't eat it, it will definitely be put into use!

No running today, just tennis!

I did, however, bake "Jesus cookies", well that's what I was calling them because they were for church. I took an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe and made it a little healthier and changed the chips to butterscotch because that's what I had. They were a hit, although somewhat crumbly off the pan. Once they sat around an hour or two they held together fine. No one missed the butter!

This made 27 cookies for me, but was supposed to make 30:

 [Relatively Healthy] Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies

  • 1/3 cup applesauce (the recipe called for butter here)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour (i only had whole wheat and white, so I did half and half)
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup quick cooking oats
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips (i did butterscotch)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter and sugars with an electric mixer. Beat in egg and vanilla. In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Stir flour mixture into sugar mixture until well combined. Stir in oats, then chocolate chips. Spoon dough 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 10-12 minutes.

Ran 3 mile warm up, 21:48 for the 5k tempo,1 mile cool down.  I think this was slower than back in the spring but I have to check. It was super dooper humid, as usual, and muddy, which was kind of fun actually.  Not quite able to stay with Lauren, Micah and Sheryl, but close.

If I end up doing the paper flower theme, I'm thinking of these centerpieces in colors to match my theme, and I would add a tiny light in each flower to light up the room.

And this cake

Of course I could alter the flower if someone knows a better way. I would also like to make cloth flowers for the bridesmaids hair if anyone knows how, if not I will purchase them. I like these

I just realized FSU plays BYI in football in September. I would totally go if I didn't have a grand prix race that weekend. Darn!

Headed for a little double vacay really early tomorrow morning (getting up at 2:30am) with Jason's family in Myrtle Beach and then my family in Port Charlotte.  I will be missing out on intervals with the track club, and with my mile grand prix race coming up I knew I needed the speed work. I had a crazy day, followed by going to the local shelter with my church group to cook dinner for the approximately 300 guests they have for dinner each night. We were finished around 8:30 and I went straight to the track, trying to get home as early as possible to get some sleep and trying to avoid a big storm that was coming. I warm up about a mile and begin my workout, which I decided would be as many 400s as I can stay motivated for, preferably 12 but thinking it will end up being like 5.

All of that rushing had me rush my first interval as well, running a 79. A little too fast, but that's okay. I jogged an easy lap around and was about to start my second 400 and long story short a guy on the track decided to race me to amuse himself and his friends. He took off when I did, way too fast, and I just let him go because I didn't realize we were racing. After the first 200 I realized what was going on and caught up to him, finishing a second or two behind him. I am sure that wasn't quite the victory margin he wanted. During my easy lap the sky opened and it started pouring, so they guys left. That left me and two other speedy girls on the track. I loved it! I felt so hard core running in the rain and loved that two other girls who seemed to be doing some type of interval workouts of their own were the only people to work through it. At times the rain was an inch or two deep on the track. I continued to do 400 on, one lap off (a little more than 400 because I had to run in lane 4).

Times:

79, 76, 89, 89, 91, 89, 87, 86, 89, 85, 87, 85

I can't believe I finished an entire speed workout by myself. I am super proud, and my times weren't bad considering the weather. They were actually better than my last 400s with the track club. I think my body was thankful that it wasn't 1000 degrees.

My easy weekend long run group ended up starting at the same place and time as the weekend long distance tempoers. They do an out and back, fast out, and super fast back. So we ended up hanging onto their pace for most of our run, and got out in like 35 minutes, and back in 37 (it is like .1 longer on the way back, and uphill, so we did great!). I have been having too many negative thoughts go through my head while I run. And every time I run I think about how I am never running again. Then when I am finished I forget how miserable I was and put myself through it again. I don't know why I am feeling so "miserable" when I run but I need to get over it. I have on and off days with feeling good, but even if my body feels good I sometimes don't enjoy it. I think it's because I run all my workouts kind of hard, since they are all group workouts. But isn't that the point?

this happens to me when i put sugar into an empty stomach --- gels, sports drinks, etc. i have had some horrible race experiences because of of this, so i no longer take gels and i will only drink very small amounts of sports drinks, but only if i can dilute it with water.

if that isn't the issue, it may be because you are running too soon after you eat. if your stomach is still trying to digest and you start running, the blood flows to the legs and away from the intestines, causing cramping and other fun stuff. gravity and the pounding movements of running don't help with this.

From allie on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 13:00:35 from 67.177.43.41

Wow, let's just say this run was super unexpected and I am very, very happy. It is my first official 5k (certified course!) under 19, and it wasn't the easiest course either. It was also a competitive race in our grand prix series and I was able to come away with a win. I have felt crappy for a long time now, and finally something clicked Thursday and my legs didn't feel tired as soon as I started. I was hoping that would carry on to this week and it really did.

The ladies got to start 5 minutes before the men, and my friend Micah took the lead right away. She has been having great workouts and should run 18:30 or so on a good day. I decided to just stay as close as possible for as long as I could so that I could end up with a decent time (I was thinking 19:30ish). After Micah was me and a woman named Sarah (a 46 year old ex-olympic speed skater).  We didn't see anyone else the entire race.

Sarah was awesome, she is such a good competitor.  We took turns pulling each other up the hills and slowly caught up to Micah who had a 10 second lead during most of the race. Around 2 miles I yelled at Micah to keep it up but it was obvious she was getting tired.  We caught her and passed her around 2.5. Sarah said something along the lines of "you go for it" as we continued to push the pace and she fell back just the slightest. So I pushed with everything I had (mostly fear), turned a corner and saw the clock at 18:40. I didn't see anything else from then on, it was just me, the finish line, and the clock. I crossed right as the clock was turning to 19, so I wasn't sure if I got it or not. I went back to the people taking the splits, and they said it was 18:59.89. While on the results page it will be rounded up to 19, I am definitely taking it as a sub-19, because the official time said it was!  Sarah finished only a second or two behind me (which is a little scary, I had no idea she was there!) and Micah another 5-10 seconds behind her.  A lot of people came up to me after the race saying things like "not to sound rude, but I didn't see that one coming." I'll take it as a compliment :)

This was one of my best races ever, and should pretty much clinch the grand prix series for me as long as I show up for the last two races. I really needed a race like this to get me back into the spirit of running again.

Congrats on a solid run.

We used to have a Women's Distance Festival 5k in Huntsville, but I think it transformed into something else recently. In any case, the women's race was completely separate (and before) the men's race, and it was on a pretty difficult course, too.

Again, congrats on the new PR, and way to bust through another minute mark (sub-18...here she comes....)

I had this great idea that I would turn the Thursday night tempo into a long run. The plan was to run 9 miles, then do the tempo with everyone else (at a slower pace of course) for a total of 14 miles. It ended up being over 95 degrees and my body just couldn't handle it. I did 7 instead of 9 before, then couldn't finish the tempo. I am okay with it though, I did my best and the heat just killed me. My legs were aching so bad after that I had to lay down on a bench to put them up. I probably ended up doing just short of 10. Not quite what I wanted due to the 20k next weekend, but I figure that race is more like a workout for me anyway.

This race was crazy! Definitely cross country at its best. I wasn't sure how I would do due to lack of endurance, and I definitely felt it around mile 6. The rough terrain really started to get to my feet and ankles.  They got tired of being flopped around so much.  I got muddy, ran up hills that would have been faster to walk up, ran in sand, tripped on roots, and kind of took a wrong turn. Luckily I noticed we did it and called everyone back. At that point I was in third, and my friend Olivia was in second. Since she had a 15-20 second lead on me, she ended up almost a minute behind me because of the wrong turn. So I slowed down in mile 12 to let her get me. I figured all I wanted was a workout, and I wanted the results to be fair. She deserved it. I can probably subtract about a minute from my time associated with all of the confusion and waiting.

I'll have to get my splits later although they don't mean much on this course. We did run a couple of sub-7s in the middle, even with some hills in there.

The funny thing is my time on this crazy course was faster than my half marathon PR pace. I really need to run a good half to get that down. I decided to do the Hoover Dam Half on Halloween when I am in Vegas for my brothers wedding. I don't know how I'll run out there though.

Kelli- I just checked out the race. Looks like we don't go over the damn, just all around it I guess. I've never been there so I don't really know how to explain it. Apparently there are a bunch of switchbacks that we go down, get to the dam, then go up? Here's the link for more info :)

Disney was a good marathon. I went to FSU for my undergrad and my first marathon was the Tallahassee Marathon and I've done a few other smaller ones, Disney was by far the biggest. I'm actually doing it again this year. The weather is always unpredictable in Florida even in the winter, last year was nice, but my dad did the race a few years ago and he said that it was in the 80's. There isn't really an after party though, only soda, cookies, fruit, and bagels.

My sub-19 is officially not a fluke! Although I would like to go at least a full second under at some point. At WDF I ran 18:59.89 and today I ran 18:59.45.  A PR is a PR, right?

Some FSU girls came out today who I knew were fast, so I knew it was going to be a tough race. My first two miles were 6:02 and 6:04, so I thought I was going to run a really good time. I fell back the last mile, and the couple of hills didn't help, so I ran something around 6:15 or something like that.  I was in second for a little (for most of mile 2) but it didn't last. Maybe I am getting selfish, but I would really like to run a 18:58. 18:59 isn't as exciting as it used to be.

They gave out free skin cancer screenings and I have one they think I need to get removed. Boooo. I knew that was going to happen though.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I finally have time to write about the race. I went to Vegas for my brother's wedding and decided to do this half while I was there.

I will have to look up my splits later but the race went something like this:

The bus from the Strip got there late, we only had 5 minutes to check in, use the bathroom, put on chip and number, and get to the line.  Having been in Vegas the last few days, breathing in smoke, eating bad food, and not getting much sleep, I wasn't sure how this was going to go.  I also hadn't run all week because I was so busy with the festivities.

When we started off only one girl started a bit faster than me, so I decided to pass her right away and get into position with some men to encourage me to run faster.  That didn't end up working out, as it was a tiny race, and I ended up running on my own through the entire thing.  I had devil ears on as my costume but I realized quickly that they were going to be too annoying to run in, so I threw down at the mile marker.

The first half was up and down for me.  The first mile I just couldn't catch my breath.  I don't know what that was all about.  Miles two and three I had pretty bad pain in my shins. I honestly thought I may not be able to finish if the pain kept getting worse.  When we switched to the trails I think it helped my shins out a little.  Miles four to six felt exceptionally great.  It was a gradual uphill but I didn't feel it at all in my legs.  My splits weren't super fast, but my legs felt great.  They were also my favorite miles of the course, as we ran through some tunnels that were blasted through the mountains.  It was pretty sweet, and one of the tunnels was so long that it was pitch black in the center.  During the final tunnel I saw a pretty little marathoner in a lady bug costume and it was Smooth. My first FRB meeting!!! I was super excited and screamed her name, and she yelled mine back and we both yelled to each other as we ran in opposite directions.

Then there was a mile of small rolling hills that went okay, followed by the downhill switchbacks to the dam. I don't know what happened here, if I forgot to hit my watch or what, but my split was like 13 minutes. I got confused a little bit on the course, but it shouldn't have added more than a minute, so I really don't get it.

Then I ran by the dam, and honestly didn't see it. I was kind of confused about the course so I didn't even notice I was in front of it. Bummer! The photog got a picture of me all confused in front of the dam, so at least I'll see what I look like in front of it even though I didn't see it.  Then it was time to go back up the switchbacks- it was horrible. And the next mile was the rolling hills, which were much, much harder in this direction.  My split for this mile was like 10 minutes.  I think this actually pretty true, I had a lot of trouble recovering from the switchbacks and following hills.

I was nervous because I saw the second place girl and figured she was only a minute or two behind me.  The rest of the race was gradual downhill for the most part, which proved tough on the loose gravel on the trails. But I pushed really hard, and I was surprised how hard it was for me to keep the pace.  I was able to get my splits to about 7:05 for the last few miles but it took a lot of work. I won, and once again it was fun to slap Jason's hand as I ran to the finish line, although he knew I wouldn't be too thrilled about the time.

I ended up getting a PR (I haven't run many halfs) so I am happy about that, but I really wanted to be much faster. I was expecting to be at the very least under 1:35.  But with my confusion about the course and a few other setbacks, I guess I should be happy with the time. The trails proved really tough for a half marathon- they weren't that great for trying to keep a fast pace.  I really slid around a lot on my way down.

It was cool running out west; the scenery was beautiful.  My nose bled from the dry air after the race.   TMI?

I'll get my splits on here later.

I loved those tunnels, the dark one had me worry a bit. The NO PASSING switchbacks were NOT fun! I think in the future when the bridge is finished, we may be able to run on the dam instead of down the ADA switchbacks to the top level of the garage for turn around.

Wish I could have "visited" with you! Hope you come out west to run again sometime!

So we decided to meet in the middle in Mobile Alabama for Wednesday and Thursday. I don't know what kind of meal we will be able to find, but at least we'll be able to be together!

So I will be missing the turkey trot here, but I am doing an 18 mile race this Saturday, so I will need to rest anyway! I am pretty nervous about it, but it will tell me if I will be able to salvage my January marathon.

Are you turkey trotting?

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 20, 2009 at 09:51:28 from 71.219.71.229

I wish we were turkey trotting, but we are swine fluing!! I was going to sign up to run with two of my kids, but I am sure someone will be sick with it by then (if not me) and i did not want to waste the money. I wish there were day of sign ups!

Okay, I missed the engagement apparently! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! Meeting in the middle sound great, and, if nothing else, I am sure you can find pumpkin pie!

Good luck with the 18 miler! Which marathon you aiming for in January?

Woo hoo one more long run down! Only two 20s to go. I was going to run an 18 mile race today but the girl I was carpooling with got sick. So I stayed home and ran (at Bradley's) on my own, figuring it would save time and money.

I usually say a good long run is an uneventful one. While this one was not so uneventful, it still went pretty well running-wise.

Long story short, at mile 6 I took a bottle of water out of my fuel belt and realized "surprise... soap!" I had soaked them in soapy water over night (I hadn't used them since last year so they were musty) and I must not have rinsed them out well enough. The bouncing associated with my running turned my water into soap suds. I had no idea what to do. Do I run back to my car and only run 12 miles? The thought of attempting the long run again in a few days did not sound fun, so I just kept going.  At least I had soapy water to wash my hands with after I used the woods as a restroom.  In a sense it motivated me to run harder, just to get back to my car and get home for some water.

My legs felt pretty good the whole time, I was able to pick up the pace along the way and dropped a couple sub 8s in the second half. The problems came from the toes on my left foot (awkward toenail cut perhaps?) and my stomach.  Both made me stop a few seconds several times during the run.  My stomach really started cramping at the end... maybe dehydration? But my legs felt as good, if not better, than I had hoped.  I was waiting to reserve my hotel room until I got this run over with and was sure I was up to a marathon. But I think I will go ahead and book it! What a relief.

I've thought about doing MS Blues again (I'm torn between it and a somewhat low-key 50k on New Year's Eve - I guess I could do both...).

Have you run it before?

From Kelsey on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 13:24:56 from 128.186.154.139

I did the inaugural half. It was also my first half so I struggled to run like 1:55. What did you think of the hills in the full course? Were they rolling, as in you can carry a momentum, or were they really monotonous?

From Nevels on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 13:33:17 from 131.204.15.93

As far as a road course is concerned, it was definitely not an easy course. There is something like a 4-mile stretch down Lakeland Dr. that is pancake flat, and you can make up some time there, but it can also get somewhat boring in the middle, and right after you get off of Lakeland onto Ridgewood Rd, the hills come back with a vengeance. All in all, though, I thought it was an incredibly well-organized race. It has enough challenging aspects to keep it interesting, while at the same time not being so difficult that you can't run fast (I think the winner last year was something like 2:14, so fast times are possible...)

In any case, let me know if you do it; it is always good to meet people from the blog (although I probably ought to get my rear end back in shape if I'm going to enter a marathon...)

A little tenderness in the hamstring left over from the long run.

One 20 miler down!!

4 mile warm up, 10 mile race (avg. 7:55 I think), 6 mile cool down.

Legs felt pretty good... stomach, not so much.   It was drizzling and in the lower 40s, but turned out to be not quite as miserable as I expected.

I am ADDICTED!!! Soooo good :)

And as an ice cream aficionado, nothing cures my ice cream craving except peppermint ice cream. No other flavors. Maybe it's because I know it's temporary? I have even started making the peppermint chocolate chip milkshakes at home!

I'd say do your best to stay dry during the warmup (maybe warmup inside if it's an option, if not, just do your best to keep your core and head warm/dry during the warmup), then run outside just a minute or so before the start, dressed as if it were dry. Half marathon race pace should keep you warm enough.

Just my $0.02

From allie on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 10:12:49 from 98.202.119.100

yes, just try to stay as dry as possible so you don't start the race soaking wet. as for the 40 degrees...nevels is right. you will stay plenty warm running at race pace. those white gloves in your picture also might be a good idea. good luck tomorrow.

Thanks guys, you made it seem a little more bearable. About to leave and it's 37 and raining pretty good. I think I am wearing shorts, short sleeves and this fancy schmancy running rain jacket i got yesterday. (Early Christmas present from my parents, woo hoo!) Plus the gloves.

I bet I am one of the only people that is going to sign up for this thing on race day!
