I planned on taking this race way easier, but it was just too easy to get swept into the excitement. The top 300 runners (of 12,000?) got VIP treatment at the starting line, and I was one of them! It made me feel so important, and I just couldn't go out there and run 7 minute miles or more like my original plan.

So I went out and actually ran a pretty tough race. Mile 1 felt okay, then miles 2-4.5 or so my calves started burning really bad. I even thought a couple times "what if I can't finish." I really wish I could figure out what was wrong with them. Maybe I need to get a massage and get them worked on? I actually think I had this problem once in college, I'll explain at a later date.

Once my calves started feeling better I was able to pick it up a little bit and get comfortable with the pace. The only major hill was when we ran across the bridge around mile 8-8.5. It slowed me up a little but I passed people, and then I flew down the other side of the bridge and in to the finish. I passed four or five girls at this point. I was shocked at my endurance; my major concern going into the race was the distance. But if my calves felt better I may have been able to PR, even though it was a tougher course. For my next race (a 10k) I think I am going to warm up a lot and hope I get all of the pain out during my warm up.

It was really fun running through Jacksonville. When we ran through some of the neighborhoods everyone was in their front yard tailgating with mimosas and tons of food, cheering all of us on (our names were on our numbers). There were a lot of bands and entertainment along the course. The course would have been cooler if we could see anything... it was realllly foggy the whole time.  I highly recommend this event. It was very organized, and if you can get into the top 300 seeds it is really exciting at the start! I received a hat that says "top 10% finisher."

An extra special thanks to Becky (and Dallas of course) for letting me stay in their beauuuutiful beach front condo :)

Way to go baby! You are just a little speedster aren't you! Darn it! I am so proud of you and can't wait to see all the details :) WAY TO GO!!!

Great job Kelsey! Especially since you didn't think you were going to run hard. The calf pain is tough, I get regular cross-friction work (or tough massages) done on my legs, I really believe it has helped me a lot. Do you always warm-up for such a short time before you race?

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 18:41:32 from 71.219.76.202

Chalk up another amazing run! You are a fabulous runner and just always amaze me! There is NO WAY you eat as much ice cream as I do, it would slow you down too much! I think it would be so cool to get the VIP treatment like that. At marathons the elite have their own porta potties and they NEVER have to wait in line, that is worth it right there!

I hope you get the calf pain figured out soon!

Way to not disappoint! You're a great runner.

I knew it! Camicakes are the secret! Next year I will actually let you rest pre-race! :)

Running with 12000 other people must have been quite a rush. You probably had runners close by you the entire race. Great job.

Congrats on a great race. It was perfect weather - after all the worries that it was going to be hot.

I have run this race a few times (since 1992) and it just gets better (and busier) each year. If you stay around Tallahassee until next Feb., think about running the Donna Marathon or 1/2 - another well run race!

You did amazing - what a great time!!!

Best of luck to you.

Allie, Marion and Burt- Thanks for the continued support!

Kelli- If I lived closer I would challenge you to a contest.

Bonnie- I usually warm up further, but I was worried about the distance aspect of this event, so I saved it for the race. I am going to warm up 3-4 miles for my next race and hope I can get the muscles really warmed up beforehand. I think I may have to try those massages!

twinkies- I definitely loved having all the people around me. I looove talking to other runners and the volunteers and entertainers while running, so this was a great race for me.

cp8010- (Sorry, don't know your name!) Glad you enjoyed the race as well. The weather was pretty nice; the fog was very eerie when crossing the bridge!

You could beat me running, but I am sure I could get you with the ice cream! I could live on it!!! You are awesome!
